New Taiwan Folk Lily 2013 - Taiwan’s First Independent Women Folk Festival
NTFL (New Taiwan Folk Lily) is not only the very first music festival in Taiwan that focuses on original folk music but also on local Taiwanese independent female musicians. The two-day music festival features 9 female singer/songwriters that perform original folk music in Mandarin, Taiwanese, Hakka, Formosan (language of the aboriginal tribes) and English.
The event is independently organized by its founder Shivanii Chang and co-founder Kate Chi-an Lin. Shivanii Chang, the 23-year-old founder of the event is a young poet and musician. During her college years, she took two years off and traveled around the island of Taiwan, including several aboriginal tribal villages in the mountains. During the trip she met several talented and inspirational female singer/songwriters, who had deep connection and love for the land of Taiwan. This experience inspired her with the idea of holding a music festival that focused on female and folk music of Taiwan.
Folk songs have a long history of reflecting the true culture of a society; they often talk about the current issues and the collective affections of the people. Chang thinks that the new wave of folk songs written by young generations in Taiwan not only speaks for the current issues of Taiwanese society, the female perspectives in the songs also add unique characteristics into the music.
New Taiwan Folk Lily Music Festival takes the purity and lively spirit of the Taiwan Lily as the main logo to resemble the Taiwanese female independent musicians, who are often making music from their soul and not swimming along with the mainstream record labels, in the hope that through this music festival, more and more people can come to appreciate their music and support the Taiwanese folk scene.
