Coming from diverse background and styles, a group of ragtag musicians meet in the common ground of Taipei through fate and circumstance, joined by our passion for music. An eclectic collection of Blues, Jazz, and Latin, the Stray Cats features a wide range of music that appeals to many different groups and reflects the individual tastes and styles of each member.
James Liu studied clarinet at the age of 12, and completed my studies at the University of Southern California. He has played classical, studio jazz, dixieland, combos, and even a little Latin jazz and polka. He doubles on the alto, tenor, and the EWI (Electric Wind Instrument). He is the current manager of Cats with Class, a variety band specializing in original jazz. He believes that music is not limited by styles but by the experience of the performer. He works with diverse groups, including rock bands, polka bands, chamber ensembles, and even orchestras.
From birth, Harold was raised on a steady diet of Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Buddy Rich and the Modern Jazz Quartet to name just a few. The Toronto, Canada native was fortunate enough to often see those and many other jazz and blues legends in concert throughout his formative years. Not too long after attending a Ray Charles concert in 1989 he was on a plane headed for Hong Kong where he lived, worked and played in a number of bands for 20 years. After a 4 year music sabbatical in Singapore he moved to Taipei where he has been enjoying the music scene.
