http://bennettmediastudio.com/blog/?s=gamin

Gamin

gamin, perhaps the most celebrated piri (cylindrical double-reed bamboo oboe) artist of her generation, who is constantly moving forward and pushing the limit to “invent” new sonorities from a rather limited and ancient, yet powerful instrument, the piri. gamin is also a master of taepyeonso (double-reed trumpet-like horn) and saenghwang (mouth organ, sheng in Chinese).

Experiment, passion, surprise, elegance and subtlety—are some of the words describing the music of gamin. Most importantly, she understands what “tradition” really means and how to communicate with the contemporary audience to connect the old and the new. From 2000 to 2010, she was a principle member of the Contemporary Gugak Orchestra at the National Gugak Center, the hub for training and preserving Korean traditional music. Solidly trained in Jeongak (Korean classical court music) studied with JUNG Jae-Guk, the title holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Asset No, 46 for piri and daechwita. gamin also studied sinawi (the music of shaman rituals), as well as sanjo (improvisational solo genre).

According to the music director of the National Changgeuk [Korean Traditional Opera] Company, You Yeong-dae, “Gamin’s music is “free-spirited in restrain, delicate in bluntness, and sorrow in bliss.” gamin has been active not only as a soloist, but as a performer in chamber ensembles, as well as soloist for many concertos performing with some of the most prestigious orchestras in Korea, such as the Contemporary Gugak Orchestra, KBS Traditional Orchestra, Gyeonggi Provincial Traditional Music Orchestra, and Seoul Metropolitan Youth Orchestra.

The musical scope of gamin expands widely from quintessential traditional repertoires of Korean music, crossover genres, and contemporary music to improvisational performances introduced in live performances and recordings both in Korea and overseas.

gamin has released three albums: “Attraction,” the first album made to popularize the piri for the general public; “Juxtaposition” explores the harmony between piri, saenghwang (mouth organ, sheng in Chinese) and taepyeongso (double-reed trumpet-like horn) with marimba; and the third album, “Progression” contains more progressive contemporary music that features various instruments including piano and synthesizer. Her recent project, “Eight Sounds,” utilizes a museum-like design as a means to express her artistic vocabulary combining the sounds of piri, saenghwang, and taepyeongso with synthesizer, fashion and video art. Yoon Jung-gang, a renowned music critic, acclaimed that “the museum became the place of deep enchantment transcending the time and space by the music of Gamin.”

Dreaming to be on the upscale global stages, gamin has been a recipient of several cultural exchange programs. She was a recipient of a residency program grant from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Republic of Korea in 2011 and has toured for lecture concerts at Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth College, Northeastern University, University of Hartford, and among other places. During her residency in New York City Gamin gave a solo recital at Bennett Media Studio and recorded improvisational works with some of the prestigious musicians in New York City. Stepping forth, she has been invited by governmental organization of France and Germany and performed in Paris, Strasbourg, Freiburg and Karlsruhe in 2011. gamin recently appeared in Cross-Cultural Improvisation, Workshops & Performances in New York City collaborating with some of the world-acclaimed musicians, such as Jane Ira Bloom, Elliott Sharp, and others, with a premier performance at the Roulette Theater in 2013. gamin has been received numerous awards and prizes from some of the most prestigious music competitions, including the Nangye Gugak Competition in 1993, Dong-A

Gugak Competition in 1996, WCO in 2004 and the New Artist's Award from the Korean Art Performers Association in 2006.

Currently, she is Yisuja, official holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Asset No. 46 for Classical Court Music, Piri and Daechita (royal military music). In addition to her artistic endeavor, she dedicates herself to academic studies. She is a Ph.D candidate in Korean traditional music at Seoul National University, and writes her own column for the magazine, “Arts and Culture.”

Most recently gamin has been selected as Artist-in-Residence sponsored by the Asian Cultural Council (ACC) of Rockefeller Foundation, and scheduled to be appeared in Flushing Town Hall, Korean Cultural Service NY.

*yisuja is a title designated to someone who mastered a course study in a intangible cultural asset of Korea. jeonsuja is a lower title.

*Bennett Media Studio is a destination of major TV, film, and photo shoots located in New York. It organizes art exhibition and live performances as well.

gamin was invited to perform in 2011 and 2012. You can see her performance video at http://bennettmediastudio.com/blog/?s=gamin
