“Some of the spaces that Adam James Sorensen shares are as wide as the mouth of a canyon, easily accessed and open to us without posing any danger. My favorites, though, are the ones I have to squeeze into with caution and care, trying to connect to the pain, nostalgia and truth about us all that’s not quite so comfortable.” - Bob Hill

As Adam James Sorensen's lyrics navigate through personal terrain, the warm timbre of his voice evokes a subtle strength that embraces the listener with both arms. Returning to his native home, Chicago, was the catalyst for his newly released solo debut, MIDWEST. Evoking a strong melancholic undertone, MIDWEST offers Sorensen's observations with a reflective and honest fragility.

Born in Chicago, Sorensen studied Anthropology at Western Illinois University immediately after high school, but was restless and left his studies after only 3 semesters. His desire to explore first led him to Salt Lake City. While there he renewed his focus on music, and performed, recorded and toured as a sideman with several bands. He soon relocated to New York City to pursue his music career, immersed himself in NY's thriving music scene, and finished a BFA in performance at the New School University. As he began to perform regularly in both Europe and the U.K., he chose to again relocate. While spending his time in Barcelona, Edinburgh, Berlin and Paris, he continued his music career in Europe for three years before choosing to return to Chicago in 2009. As Sorensen's life had remained in constant motion for well over a decade, his return to Chicago provided a context to both reflect and process. “Returning to the Midwest wasn't easy, but it's been healing”.

On MIDWEST, he builds a lush and distinctive sound with the help of an eclectic, highly seasoned group of musicians. The album was recorded at Forgiveness Studio with renowned alt-folk producer Evan Brubaker (Edie Carey, Rachel Harrington), and features a remarkable line-up of guest musicians that include violist Eyvind Kang (Bill Frisell, Beck), multi-instrumentalist Mark Spencer (Son Volt), cellist Christopher Hoffman (Henry Threadgill), Seattle singer/songwriter Rachel Harrington & mandolin legend Don Stiernberg.

Trixie Royale's Burlesque (11.30pm)

Trixie Royale is a swing, burlesque and cabaret performer, dancer, teacher, choreographer, director and costume designer, originally from Russia and now based in Beijing, China. Her style is based on deep understanding of Jazz Era (1920s – 1950s), and unique in its historical authenticity.

She had performed, and taught workshops in Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Sweden, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and a few other countries.

Trixie doesn’t forget her Russian roots even after 8 years living and performing in Asia. Besides the act based on traditional Russian folk dancing and appearance (Kalinka), her favorite act to perform is a cabaret chair dance, in which she appears as a Russian spy from a James Bond movie.

Trixie had been dancing, teaching and performing Jazz Age dances such as Swing, Tap, Balboa, Foxtrot and many others for almost 12 years. But she feels especially passionate about the roaring 1920s sensation – the Charleston.

Trixie gets her inspiration from the 1920s entertainers such as Charlie Chaplin and Josephine Baker, and has a few tribute acts in which she is impersonating Chaplin or doing Baker’s famous banana skirt dance.

In her performances Trixie pays very detailed attention to the authentic vintage look and historical accuracy. Everything from music and costumes to hair and makeup is designed according to the fashion of the time, replicating the classic look of the 1920s – 1950s.

Unlike many Neo-burlesque performers, Trixie always builds her act around a skill, combined with authentic vintage look and creative theme, from Beetlejuice poi juggling to Moulin Rouge glamour feather fan tease.
